Simms strikes twice

Benn Simms rounded off a successful guest weekend in Historic Formula Ford with another win, employing the same tactics he used in Race 1 to keep Callum Grant in second.

Simms, driving his Jomo JMR7, traded the lead with Grant’s Merlyn Mk20 throughout the 20-minute race, with a lead change guaranteed every lap as they dared each other to pass at the bottom of the Mountain. Simms put himself in front on the penultimate lap and even an outside challenge could not get Grant back in front. Grant had pulled out a small lead in the preceding lap, but Simms was determined not to let him get away.

The scrabble for third place was between Spencer Shinner’s Merlyn and Chris Porritt’s Titan once more. Shinner managed to put some daylight between his car and Porritt’s this time, after Porritt chased him down and even took third for a lap or so earlier on.

In turn, Porritt had to evade the attention of another Merlyn, driven by Neil Hose. Sadly for Hose, his car expired on the final lap, having suffered overheating problems all weekend. He had battled from seventh place to ahead of Porritt at one point, with Shinner in reach, even though Shinner had taken advantage of the Porritt/Hose scrap to pull ahead, out of a three-way tussle. A podium would have been on the cards for Hose otherwise.

This gave fifth place to Christian Goller, in a Lola T200. He had rather a lonely race, although he did put up a fight against Hose mid-distance. He was safely in front of Mark Wilkes’s Merlyn, which held sixth despite pressure from another Lola driven by Paul Unsworth. Wilkes had passed him earlier and he was valiantly trying to get back past. Concentrating on Wilkes meant that he let Jack Butterworth (Lola T200) get quite close in eighth.

Nigel Adams was the final finisher in ninth place, driving his red and white Lotus 61.
